General REx-PN Exam Questions

REX-PN (Regulatory Examination-Evolutionary Nurse) is a standardized license examination that is necessary to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or registered practical nurse (RPN) in Ontario and British Columbia. It has been developed and administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) in partnership with regulatory nursing bodies in Canada.

Yes. Rex-PN is available only in Ontario and British Columbia. Candidates have to apply through the College of Nurses through Ontario (CNO) or British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and must be eligible to meet the registration requirements.

Yes. Internationally educated nurses (IENS) who want to practice as LPNS or RPNS in Ontario or B.C. Rex-PN should be passed until they are already eligible for registration under another recognized license route.

REx-PN Format and Structure

Rex-PN uses a computerized adaptive test (CAT) format. This means that the exam adjusts difficulty in real time based on your answers. Exam Station:
1. Minimum: 90 questions
2. Maximum: 150 questions
3. Time limit: up to 5 hours (including brakes)

The test also evaluates your clinical decisions, moral decision making and the ability to manage care for a lifetime.

There is no fixed passing score. Instead, the test algorithm evaluates whether your performance meets the passing standard, depending on the difficulty of the questions you successfully answered. If you determine the system, you pass, with 95% confidence, that your capacity is above the passing standard.

REx-PN Exam Study and Prep Questions

Most successful candidates study for 6 to 8 weeks, depending on their background and familiarity with Canadian nursing standards. A coherent study plan that focuses on weak areas is recommended for best results.
